Advocacy: Leading the Resilient College

Advocacy icon

“Advocacy is educating the minds and softening the hearts of those who have the power to influence change.”

— Debbie Sydow, President, Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, NY

Advocacy is telling the community college story in a way that is meaningful to stakeholders.  Leaders need to know how to frame the issues and set the tone for discussion and decision-making.

They must demonstrate stewardship of public resources and augment them with private support.

Leaders of resilient colleges advocate for diversity and open access as fundamental elements of the community college mission.

Past Programs:

“Advocacy always involves intentional action.”

— Regina Peruggi, President, Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, NY

“Advocacy is not only finding--but creating--opportunities to 'tell the community college story.'”

— Martha A. Smith, President, Anne Arundel Community College, Arnold, MD

“One challenge to advocacy is finding the right niche between passivity and commercial-style self-promotion.”

— Stephen Hamilton, Associate Provost for Outreach, Cornell University
