Mentoring
This program is based on research on best practices for mentoring in community colleges. It assists campuses in defining their mentoring goals and clarifying the roles and responsibilities of both the mentor and mentee:
- What can or cannot they expect from the relationship?
- What makes a good match between mentor and mentee?
- How often should they meet?
- How should the contract be formulated?
- What institutional support needs to be provided?
- How does mentoring compliment your other development activities?
Mentoring workshops help you design mentoring programs for administrators, faculty, or support staff. ICCD staff can also help you prepare a mentoring handbook.
Montgomery County Community College (2005-06)
In the second year of its leadership development program, Montgomery County Community College assigned each participant to a mentor among the college's senior administrators, including the president. Assignments were made across disciplines and campuses to help extend the knowledge and skills of the participants.
This was the first experience with a formal mentoring relationship for almost all mentors and mentees. The goal of the program was to arrive at mutual goals and expectations. Best practices from ICCD's research were used to provide practical tips for a successful outcome.
